AMP – The Return of the 1990s (March 9): The nineties were a time of experimentation and exploration of music, good music. The kids went to shows, saw bands, danced, met people and made friends. AMP “The Return of 1990s” is a music event/retro party at Shibuya Nob where the clock is set back to recreate those kick-ass times!
Japan Local (Furusato) Food Festival (March 10–11): Eat your way around Japan at this food festival specializing in local (furusato) dishes. Entry is free and it’s right by Yoyogi Park, so you can take your fare and have yourself a picnic too!
Washi Candle Garden (March 10–12): The students of Tama Univeristy host the annual Washi Candle Garden at Tokyo Midtown in remembrance of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Each paper lantern has a message of support to the people of the affected area. The event is part of the school’s We Love Japan Project.
National Museum of Western Art – Free Admission Day (March 10): This Saturday, check out the extensive permanent collection at the Museum of Western Art in Ueno Park for free! Works includes paintings from the late medieval period through to the 20th century and modern French sculpture. Artists include Ruebens, Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Pollock and many more.
Mt. Takao Hiwatari Festival (March 11): If you’ve ever wanted to try walking over hot coals, now is your chance. This fiery festival comes around but once a year as a way to purify and cleanse—as well as to promote world peace, health and prosperity. No need to sign up, just show up and walk the walk!
