Yokohama Chinatown Lion Dance

Yokohama kicks off Chinese New Year celebrations this Friday with an impressive lion dance throughout the streets of its Chinatown. Watch as the ‘lions’ dance about, gobbling up vegetables and red envelopes (containing money) that are hung outside of shops and homes—all in the spirit of bringing good luck and prosperity. This is just the first of many events for the Chinese Spring Festival.

Nerd Nite #30: Talking Trash

Nerd Nite is “the Discovery Channel with beer”, a worldwide monthly event series that mixes presentations, performances, trivia, demos, music, and of course drinking.

National Museum of Western Art – Free Admission Day

Check out the extensive permanent collection at the Museum of Western Art in Ueno Park for free. Works include paintings from the late Medieval period through to the 20th century and modern French sculpture.

Uchisaiwaicho India Festival

Experience the incredible culture of India through dance, music, yoga, food and lectures.

World Valentine Festival

There’s not much info on what to expect for this year, but in past years there’s been a bazaar, food stalls selling heart-shaped items, music, and theatrical performances, and even screenings of romantic movies.

Karuta Card Game Festival 2019

Karuta is a Japanese card game traditionally played on New Year’s Day. Both Japanese and English speakers are invited to learn how to play.

Chinese Traditional Performances

Yokohama will host various Chinese traditional performances starting Saturday. Traditional dragon and lion dances, along with songs, harps and acrobatics should be expected.

Setagaya Plum Blossom Festival

This festival takes place at Hanegi Park, which has around 650 plum blossom trees (although they might just be in the budding stage now). On weekends the park hosts vendors selling plum-themed food.

Bunkyo Plum Blossom Festival

Another plum blossom festival with extras like shamisen-playing, traditional dance, tea, other Japanese cultural events, and, best of all, nighttime illuminations.
