What’s Kamenoi Hotel Ōme like?

Kamenoi Hotel Ōme is a ryokan that is most well known for its views of the Okutama Mountains and Tamagawa River, as well as its onsen facilities. Although it feels lavish, Kamenoi Hotel Ōme isn’t pretentious and is a great place for people of all ages.

What facilities does the hotel have?

This hotel has a few key facilities, with the standout feature being the onsen. Open from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., and again from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., the hot-spring baths at Kamenoi Hotel Ōme not only offer guests a relaxing experience but splendid views of the mountains of Okutama.

Other facilities include a gift shop, which sells local products such as sake from the nearby Ozawa Sake Brewery, and a restaurant.

Two other highlights are the complimentary welcome drink upon arrival, and free all-you-can-eat dandan noodles from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Is there anywhere to hang out in the hotel?

Next to the reception on the ground floor is a large lounge area where you can sit, enjoy a drink, and admire the view of the river below. Guests who smoke will be pleased to know that there is a designated smoking room next to the lounge area.

This is also the area where you pick up your yukata (casual version of a kimono) and other free amenities including razors, hairbrushes and shower caps.

What are the rooms like?

On this trip we stayed in one of the Japanese-style rooms, which was spacious. A sliding door separated the toilet and wash basin from the main space. The main tatami room is where guests sleep, on futons laid out for you after dinner.

In this room there were two different tables, a massive wardrobe, a TV, a full-sized mirror, and a drying rack. We received some complimentary snacks and green tea. Note that there is no shower or bath in the room, so you will need to go to the onsen.

How big are the rooms?

The Japanese-style room is 33m2 and sleeps up to four people. There are also a few Japanese-style rooms which are 38m2 and designed for families and groups of friends.

One of the best things about Kamenoi Ōme is that they have a mix of Japanese- and Western-style rooms, even some that are a blend of both. All of these vary in size and price. This hotel also has barrier-free rooms specifically for those accessible needs.

Are the rooms comfortable?

Yes, the 33m2 Japanese-style room is more than enough, especially for two guests. The futons were comfortable, but some may find the buckwheat pillows uncomfortable to sleep on. Apart from that, everything else is comfortable, with the space even offering a feeling of Zen.

What’s the view like?

The view is picturesque. In the room, there is a small coffee table and seats positioned next to the window, where you can sit and watch nature. From the window, you can clearly see, and hear, the river and the mountains in the distance. If you are lucky, you might even see some cranes flying past.

Should I order the breakfast?

The room price included breakfast. Avaliable only from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., the breakfast at this hotel is buffet-style and provides a mix of Western- and Japanese-style food.

The selection is good; there is a range of fruits, cereals, vegetables, and breads. It is worth mentioning that there are more traditional Japanese breakfast foods, including fried fish, natto, and curry. However, you can get Western-style cooked foods such as sausages and eggs. The drink options are also slightly limited, but there is the standard tea, coffee, and orange juice.

What’s the location like?

This hotel is in a secluded area, a 20-minute walk away from Ōme Station. The hotel provides a free shuttle bus from the station, but only three times a day. If you miss these, you can take the Toei Bus to Komagicho Junkan instead and get off at the Local Museum Entrance.

How is the access to trains and subway?

What’s the surrounding neighborhood like?

Kamenoi Hotel Ōme is right next to Kamanofuchi Park and the Tama River. The park is a popular place for swimming and barbecuing. Most people who stay here venture out to the more general Okutama area, where you can go rafting and canyoning, visit a brewery, and much more.

Are there many good places to eat nearby?

There aren’t really any restaurants in the surrounding area, only a few cafés. However, this isn’t a problem as dinner is included in the hotel price. Similar to other ryokans, Kamenoi Hotel Me serves kaiseki ryōri (a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner). The course changes depending on how many days you stay, but on the first night you can expect a mix of local vegetables, fish, nabe, and more.

What points of interest are within walking distance of the hotel?

There aren’t too many points of interest within walking distance, but these are a few that you may want to stop by:

  • Kamanofuchi Park (1-minute walk)
  • Ōme Municipal Museum of Provincial History (1-minute walk)
  • Juko-ji Temple (6-minute walk)
  • Showa Retro Goods Museum (14-minute walk)

Who should stay here?

Kamenoi Hotel Ōme is perfect for individuals, couples, and families who want to admire the beauty of Japan’s countryside without venturing out of Tokyo. We also recommend staying here if you want to experience a budget-friendly night in a ryokan or want to spend some more time near the Okutama area.

What sustainability measures do they have?

To save guests buying bottled water and wasting plastic, there is a free water dispenser located near the elevator of each floor. Inside the room, you will find a large reusable plastic bottle on your table. This is specifically for the dispenser.
