Hakone has long been a famous onsen (hot spring) destination in Japan. As such, it plays host to some of the best onsen hotels in Japan.

Whether you’re on a weekend getaway from Tokyo, or stopping over on your way to Kyoto, Hakone always makes for a relaxing holiday destination. It’s a popular spot to visit year-round and also has historical value — it was a checkpoint on the Old Tokaidō Road that used to stretch between Tokyo and Kyoto. These days, though, it’s beloved for its hot springs and cozy hot-spring accommodations. Here are some of our favorites.

Best hotels with onsen in Hakone

There are lots of onsen hotels in Hakone, so it can be hard to work out which one is the best fit for you. To help you out, we’ve looked at not only the hot-spring facilities in each hotel, but also their tattoo policies, whether they cater to different dietary requirements, and whether they have accessible or non-smoking facilities.
