Some of Tokyo’s favorite summer events take place around the city this week, including Nakameguro Summer Festival, Nakano Bon Dance Festival, and Edogawa Fireworks Festival. Idols are taking over Odaiba, and slightly further afield, Hakone is hosting its annual Lake Ashi Summer Festival.
Tokyo Idol Festival (TIF)
Tokyo Idol Festival is the world’s largest celebration of idol culture. This year’s event will once again see around 200 idol acts descend on the Odaiba and Aomi area.
Hakone Ashinoko Summer Festival
Held every year, this summer-night festival incorporates a series of local festivals around the water’s edge of Lake Ashi in Hakone.
Nakameguro Summer Festival
Saturday evening sees more than 20 teams of distinctive Awa Odori dancers sashaying and striking poses along the street, while Sunday evening features more than 28 troupes of Yosakoi dancers parading along the route.
Nakano Bon Dance Festival
The Bon Odori (Bon Dance) festival held annually at Nakano Central Park attracts huge numbers of revelers. Luckily, the park is big, so there is plenty of space to spread out.
Sunshine City Ikebukuro Bon Odori Dance Festival
Dance, feast, and be merry at the Sunshine City Ikebukuro Bon Odori Festival. This is a classic summer tradition. It brings together local residents and visitors to dance around a traditional 6-meter yagura to classic Bon Odori music at the Sunshine Plaza.
Ebisu Bon Odori Festival
The area around the bus rotary on the west side of JR Ebisu Station is transformed into a giant yukata-clad dance circle around the lantern-strewn yagura at the center.
Tsukiji Honganji Bon Dance Festival
This large Bon Dance celebration takes place at the Tsukiji Honganji Temple, just a couple of minutes on foot from Tsukiji Station. One of the highlights is a special song played only in this part of Tokyo, which is known as Tsukiji Ondo.
Hanazono Shrine Shinjuku Bon Odori
The Hanazono Shrine rendition features local folk songs and dancing, including a pre-war tune specific to the area known as Shinjuku Ondo.
Ueno Summer Festival
The main attraction is the wind chimes and lotuses in bloom at Shinobazu Pond.
Nogi Shrine Summer Festival
Expect all the summer festival standards — yatai (food trucks), entertainment, and lots of yukata-clad locals.
Hassaku Sumo Festival
The Hassaku Sumo Festival is a community celebration where children take center stage in friendly sumo bouts.
Edogawa Fireworks Festival
Running for over 50 years, the Edogawa Fireworks Festival is one of the more senior fireworks festivals in Tokyo and features the world’s tallest fireworks display, the Fuji no Daikageki.
Katsushika Fireworks Festival
The annual Katsushika Noryo Fireworks Festival sees an impressive 20,000 fireworks go off and almost 800,000 spectators set to watch them.
Itabashi Fireworks Festival
Together with the Toda-side display across the river, this festival lights up the sky with around 15,000 fireworks spread out over 90 minutes, including Itabashi’s famous Niagara Falls-style fireworks.
Ōme City Nōryō Fireworks Festival
The Ōme City Nōryō Fireworks Festival features around 3,500 fireworks hurled into the night sky over Nagayama Park in Ōme City on the evening of the first Saturday in August.
Hachiōji Fireworks Festival
Approximately 4,000 fireworks are launched at Hachiōji Shimin Kyūjō Ballpark, Fujimori Park.
Enoshima Summer Fireworks Festival
These 5-minute fireworks displays take place on August 2, and August 18 in 2026.
Hakkeijima Sea Paradise Fireworks
Approximately 2,500 fireworks will burst across the night sky in a 10-minute display.
Candlelight Concert: Magical Movie Soundtracks
A string quartet will take you on a journey through Disney hits such as Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid.
Balinese Kecak Festival
Across the five days, there will be a variety of dance and musical performances from all around the world, but the main event is a Balinese choral dance drama known as Kecak.
W Hero Festival
The Super Hero Summer Festival 2026 is a large indoor celebration of Japan’s most famous live-action heroes, combining stage shows, music, parades, games and character appearances at Tokyo Dome City.

Keirin is sprint racing with a tactical heart. It’s loud, fast, and pretty wild.
