This week is all about sumo, and lots of food. From staples of the Satsuma Domain to Yokosuka Navy Curry and Polish delicacies, events like Tokyo Tokyo Delicious Museum and Shibuya Kagoshima Ohara Festival have got you covered this week if you’re looking to discover your new favorite dish. Alongside the tastes and smells, you’ll have plenty to see and do with traditional dance, music, parades, and even some extreme skipping.
Sumo Exhibition Match and Retirement Ceremony Tour
Enjoy sumo wrestling exhibition matches and experience a rare sumo retirement ceremony on this one-day tour at the home of sumo wrestling in Tokyo. In addition, other demonstrations of sumo culture, such as a sumo jinku sumo folk song performance, makuuchi and yokozuna ring entering procession, and a yumitori-shiki bow-twirling ceremony to conclude the day’s events.
Kagurazaka Street Stage O-edo Tour
O-edo Tour turns the streets of Kagurazaka into a showcase for various traditional Japanese performing arts. This event typically features leading artists, both young and seasoned, representing diverse genres that once flourished in the neighborhood.
Shibuya Kagoshima Ohara Festival
Borrowed from Kagoshima Prefecture, this festival features food and delicacies from the Satsuma domain as well as a parade along Dogenzaka Dōri. The parade on Sunday will feature taiko drumming, marching troupes, and more kimono-clad traditional dancers than you can shake a stick at.
Okinawa Festival
Enjoy an Orion beer while watching performances from Okinawan artists and comedians. There will also be performances of eisa — Okinawa’s unique style of traditional dancing.
Poland Festival in Roppongi
The Roppongi Hills arena will host a day of Polish musicians and performers, with everything from jazz to rock on the cards. While you jam to the music and vibes, browse the shop stalls offering a collection of Polish goodies.
Yokosuka Curry Festival
Alongside the classic Yokosuka Navy Curry and Maritime Self-Defense Force Curry, there’ll be a curry buffet and a curry bread festival. During the event, the nearby Yokosuka Regional Headquarters of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (next to Verny Park) will be open to the public.
Tokyo Tokyo Delicious Museum
This event promotes some of Tokyo’s best restaurants. It’s a good chance to see what’s popular in the city at the moment. Try local Japanese dishes like grilled eel, sushi, and soba, as well as regional delicacies from around the world.
Keyaki Beer Festival
Around 90 brewers from across Japan and a few from overseas will be in attendance, serving over 400 beers. Featured breweries in the past have included Coedo, Devilcraft, Y.Market Brewing, and Kyoto Brewing Company.
Chimera Games
The event encourages children to participate and try new sports. Among some more familiar sports like skateboarding and various bike-based displays, you can also see some less common events, such as “Double-Dutch,” which is like extreme skipping.
Tokyo River Clean-Up
Tokyo River Friends organizes regular litter-picking events on the banks of the Arakawa and Edogawa rivers. As well as helping the environment, participants can enjoy a guided eco-walk experience along the riverside, learning about the wildlife on the water’s edge.
Yokohama Night Flowers
A fireworks display that lasts for around 5 minutes will set off from Osanbashi Pier or/and Shinko Pier, depending on the date. A great viewing spot is Yamashita Park.
