Tokyo events for Monday, August 3, to Sunday, August 9, 2026.
It’s another big week of summer celebrations, with major events including the inner-city Meiji Jingu Gaien Fireworks and Shibuya Bon Odori. The three-day Hachiōji Festival, one of the Kantō region’s biggest traditional float festivals, also takes place this week, while August Tanabata celebrations light up Asagaya and Fussa.
Hachiōji Festival
With a history going back to the Edo period, Hachiōji Festival is one of the biggest float festivals in the Kantō region.
Shibuya Bon Odori Dance Festival
Bon Odori (Bon Dance) festivals take place all over Tokyo in summer in order to celebrate one’s ancestors. A unique Hachiko-themed motif is scattered around the event, and you can pick up a t-shirt with the design from a nearby stall.
Meiji Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival
Approximately 10,000 fireworks will be hurled into the air over a paying audience within Jingu Stadium or the Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium.
Hakone Ashinoko Summer Festival
Held every year, this summer-night festival incorporates a series of local festivals around the water’s edge of Lake Ashi in Hakone. Moto-Hakone is the center of festivities with food stalls and festival games to keep you entertained and in the festival spirit.
Kanda Shrine Anime Bon Odori Dance
The highlight of each day is a unique Bon Odori dance with a different theme. Friday’s dance (starting at 4:30 p.m.) is the most popular for its anime music and costumes, whereas the weekend dances are hosted by local cultural organizations.
Ueno Summer Festival
The main attraction is the wind chimes and lotuses in bloom at Shinobazu Pond. There is also an old-school festival area by Shinobazu Pond with nostalgic games like shooting galleries and ring toss, plus snacks and beer.
Asagaya Tanabata Festival
The festival is famous for its paper-mâché recreations of cartoon characters as well as traditional Japanese games and a great diversity of foods lining the street.
Fussa Tanabata Festival
There will be a wide range of events centered around Fussa Station, such as performances and dances.
Okutama Nōryō Fireworks Festival
The annual Okutama Nōryō Fireworks Festival is a tiny fireworks show by Tokyo standards, but you can expect around 1,000 fireworks in a beautiful natural setting.
Hakkeijima Sea Paradise Fireworks
Approximately 2,500 fireworks will burst across the night sky in a 10-minute display.
LuckyFes 2026: BABYMETAL, ILLIT, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, and More
The event features a stacked lineup of artists spanning genres and generations from J-pop and J-rock to idol groups and VTubers.
Jurassic Park in Concert
The full film will be shown in English with Japanese subtitles, with more than 80 musicians from the Tokyo Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra performing live, conducted by Shinpei Sasaki.
W Hero Festival
The term refers to shows that use a lot of special effects, like Godzilla, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai. These shows have been broadcast for generations, so they appeal to both kids and adults alike.
