This week’s all about community spirit. Celebrate the neighborhood of Oku Asakusa at the annual Bon Dance Festival, join Kanagawa’s own pride parade, and discover your new favorite artist at Tokyo Streets X. On top of that, there’s improv, Tokyo Port Fest, a community drawing event, and Tokyo’s newest music festival.
Oku Asakusa Bon Odori Festival
A fairly new event, this odori matsuri (dance festival) celebrates the area of Oku Asakusa. The main event will be a traditional Japanese dance called Bon Odori. Dancers and festival goers will dance in a circle around a special lantern-laden scaffold called a yagura.
81 Music Festival
81 Music Festival is set to make its mark on Japan’s music scene with its debut event this June. Bringing together a diverse lineup, organizers clearly aren’t messing about with some big names on this year’s bill.
Seisho Queer Pride
The event features performances, community booths, and gatherings centered on LGBTQ+ visibility and pride. This year’s theme is “we are here”.
Tokyo Port Festival
The Tokyo Port Festival is your chance to connect with Tokyo’s harbor. Taking place at Tokyo International Cruise Terminal, there will be lots of family-oriented activities, rare ships, special exhibits, food trucks, and more.
Tokyo Streets X – 5
This multidisciplinary exhibition will feature photography, visual art, and DJs from Japan and abroad. Expect works with themes of accessibility, inclusivity, and community — hallmarks of Tokyo Streets exhibitions.
Pirates of Tokyo Bay: English & Japanese Improv Comedy
The Pirates of Tokyo Bay create improvised comedy scenes, stories, and songs based on cues from the audience. The monthly shows are frequented by a loyal and inclusive fanbase and are a great way to get involved in Tokyo’s improv community.

Naritasan Kawagoe Betsuin Flea Market
On the 28th of every month, Naritasan Kawagoe Betsuin in Kawagoe hosts a flea market. There are typically around 100 stalls selling antiques, second-hand clothes, and more.
Drink on Paper
Drink on Paper is a low-key drink-and-draw night in Sasazuka where you can sketch, snack, and pick up a few proper art-school techniques.
