The traditional Tanabata holiday is nearly among us, and that means this weekend will be filled with wishes, decorations, and parades across Tokyo and beyond. Tanabata, also known as the Star Festival, celebrates the legend of two star-crossed lovers meeting on the Milky Way every year.
Apart from wishing the humidity will go away, you can also see lanterns, a night market, and a Bon Odori dance festival.
Sneaker Con Tokyo
Sneaker Con, a global traveling event for sneakerheads, is coming to Tokyo. Expect a full day of sneakers, from grails and beaters to vintage pairs and hyped releases.

Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival
Hiratsuka’s Tanabata Star Festival is the biggest in the Kantō region. With around 300 displays in the city center, especially in Shonan Star Mall, the festival includes parades, contests, and appearances by the Shonan Hiratsuka Orihime.
Star and Sun Night Market
Star and Sun Market will take place on the Harajuku side of Zelkova Avenue in Shibuya, near the Tokyo Night Market location. On top of that, Star and Sun is set to feature some seasonally appropriate points of difference to TNM, including Bon Odori and Awa Odori dance parades.
Ocean Peoples Tokyo
Ocean Peoples is “an ocean festival for people who love the sea”. The event brings together all the best parts of the ocean, from surfboards to seafood — all to help sea-souls forget where they are for a few hours.

Yokohama Tanabata Festival
Celebrate Japan’s star festival, Tanabata, in Yokohama. This Yokohama edition promises two luminous nights packed with displays, a place to write your wishes, live performances, and food stalls.
Shitamachi Tanabata
The festival is known for its colorful decorations and events that celebrate the annual Tanabata holiday on July 7. Decorations will last a few days, but there will be parades and performances on the main weekend of the festival.
Earth Garden Summer Festival
Earth Garden is an outdoor market and festival at Yoyogi Park with a focus on promoting an ecological lifestyle. Spend the day in the park where there will be market stalls selling organic/earth-friendly wares, various workshops, a children’s area, and live musical performances.
Narita Gion Festival
Narita Gion Festival is an important traditional matsuri (festival) taking place not too far from Narita Airport. Floats decorated with intricate carvings and a mikoshi (portable shrine) parade will take place around the area surrounding Narita Station. Of course, there will also be plenty of stalls and snacks to be had.
Design Festa Vol. 61: Spring Edition
Asia’s largest art event is back! Bringing together thousands of artists from all over Japan, Design Festa has become the premier destination for those interested in creativity and artistic expression. Design Festa usually sees more than 15,000 artists exhibiting over the course of two days.

Furusato Tokyo Ouen Festival: Ueno Park Bon Dance
Bon dances and beer take over Ueno. Join a giant Bon Odori dance party that will include anime music hits. Also sway to the YMCA (a dance move everyone likes to whip out at parties) and Livin’ on a Prayer (because, well, Bon Jovi has Bon in their name).
Tokyo Tower Tanabata Festival
Tokyo Tower is ready for the Tanabata season and that means lights, candles, and wishes. The tower also gets a special light show.
