After a wet weekend, there are more than a few good reasons to get out and have some fun this week. Asakusa is hosting a rare public geisha performance as well as a popular Tanabata Star Festival event. Ueno Park is throwing a Bon Odori dance party, and Ocean Peoples is mixing live music and waterslides. At Yoyogi Park, Earth Garden Summer Festival is teaming up with Star and Sun Night Market for a weekend of music, food, and dancing.
Geisha Dances (Ozashiki Odori) in Asakusa
Asakusa is one of the six districts in the Tokyo area where geisha — traditional performers skilled in music, dance, and conversation — still entertain. The annual Ozashiki Odori features seasonal music and dance performances throughout June and July.
Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival
Hiratsuka’s Tanabata Star Festival is the biggest in the Kantō region and is known for its grand decorations, some over 10 meters tall. The festival includes parades and contests and typically attracts around 1.7 million visitors over its three days.
Shitamachi Tanabata
Decorations will last a few days, but there will be plenty to see and do on Saturday and Sunday through the 1km stretch of road from Ueno to Asakusa. Expect marching bands, traditional Awa Odori dances, and stalls from local businesses.
Yokohama Tanabata Festival
Yokohama Tanabata Festival promises two luminous nights packed with displays, a place to write your wishes, live performances, and food stalls. There will be food, drinks, and family-friendly workshops to round out the day-to-night festivities.
Hometown Tokyo Support Festival: Ueno Park Bon Dance
Furusato Tokyo Ouen (Hometown Tokyo Support) Festivals are most known for their food stalls, which display the very best of Tokyo’s restaurant scene. But this event also has an added edge: a giant Bon Odori dance party featuring anime hits.
Tokyo Racecourse Fireworks
Every year, this large-scale fireworks event has a different theme. Expect to see fireworks of all colors, shapes, and sizes, as well as some cutting-edge technology.
Ocean Peoples
Ocean Peoples is a rare festival that combines live music and waterslides. Artists perform across two stages — a beachside stage and a poolside stage — throughout the two-day event, which also boasts Kanto’s largest beach market.

Earth Garden Summer Festival
Earth Garden is an outdoor market and festival held at Yoyogi Park, focused on promoting an ecological lifestyle. Spend the day browsing market stalls and checking out workshops and live music performances. This year’s event coincides with the Star and Sun Night Market and Flamenco Festival.
Star and Sun Night Market
As expected from the organizers of Tokyo’s trendiest market event, Star and Sun will feature all the usual hits like Tokyo’s best food trucks, live music, DJs, clothing, knick-knack stalls, and street performers.
Setagaya Firefly Festival
The most popular part of the Setagaya Firefly Festival is the chance to see fireflies while walking through a dark, enclosed dome. Be prepared for long lines, and you’ll be asked to keep moving, but it is free to check out.
