Need a good laugh? Try seeing one of the many showings at the annual Downtown Taito International Comedy Film Fest. The creator Seiko Ito has created a fun weekend event to enjoy comedy films from Japan and abroad, as well as Japanese comedians. The festival spans two of Tokyo’s most famous areas: Ueno, famous for supporting the arts, and Asakusa, the birthplace of comedy in eastern Japan. In Ueno, the festival takes place at Tokyo National Museum’s Heiseikan and Shinobazu Pond Waterside Music Hall. In Asakusa, the shows will be in Asakusa Public Hall and Kaminari 5656 Kaikan’s Tokiwa Hall (on the fifth floor).
Each show has its own ticket price, the extremes of which are 500 yen and 4,000 yen. Thankfully, most tickets fall around 1,500-2,000 yen, so you can laugh without simultaneously crying at your sudden loss of cash.
