Head to Akasaka for an evening of bamboo flute music — no tickets required.
What happens?
The shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese bamboo flute with a history stretching back centuries. Once played by wandering monks as a form of meditation, it’s now used in both classical and modern music.
At this concert, you’ll hear performers from several major schools of shakuhachi, including Fuke Myōan-ryū, Kinko-ryū, and Tozan-ryū.
The instruments vary dramatically, from short flutes about 30 centimeters long to some that extend up to an imposing 3.5 shaku (over a meter). Some are simple and rustic in their construction, while others are highly polished and finished with lacquer.
The program is equally diverse, covering solo meditation pieces and ensemble works, as well as adaptations of Western compositions.
