Every July 20, Ōkunitama Shrine celebrates the plum. The festival’s roots trace to the 11th century, when military leader Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and his son stopped at the shrine to pray for victory in battle. Upon winning, they returned and offered plums as thanks.
What happens?
The festival centers on karasu uchiwa (crow fans), talismanic fans believed to ward off evil spirits, pests, and disease while ensuring good harvests. These are distributed at the shrine.
Schedule 2026
The crow fans will be distributed on Sunday, July 19, and Monday, July 20 (public holiday), from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., respectively.
There will be various stalls on July 20. Edo-style folk kagura (traditional Shinto dance and music) will be performed at the Kagura Hall at 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Three sets of fireworks will be launched at 8 a.m., noon and 6 p.m.
