The exhibition uses high-definition visuals, sound, and haptic technology to create a sensory journey through Edo-period Japan. Alongside the exhibition, several collaborations bring Hokusai’s work into different aspects of contemporary culture.

And a note for avid kimono-wearers: don your best to the exhibition and post a photo on social media to have the chance to win exclusive event merchandise.

Highlights

  • Fashion brand WACKO MARIA has created a collection inspired by Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, featuring Hawaiian shirts and yukatas. These items will be available for pre-order at the venue starting February 1.
  • Japanese craft gin maker Fukagawa Distillery has brewed up a special gin just for the exhibition. The gin incorporates yuzu and azuki, drawing from elements of Hokusai’s life and inspirations. A limited version in an Edo Kiriko-cut bottle will be available for sale at the gift shop.
  • Teuchi Soba Takenouchi has crafted a series of dishes reflecting Hokusai’s fondness for soba, available at their Tokyu Plaza Shibuya location. Each month features a different dish, drawing on Edo-period culinary traditions and seasonal ingredients.
  • A contemporary art exhibition will run in parallel, featuring reinterpretations of ukiyo-e by three artists. COIN PARKING DELIVERY, known for digital art created on smartphones, showcases works from February 1 to March 13. Fantasista Utamaro, an artist with a background in Japanese pop culture and animation, presents from March 14 to April 24. GOMA, a musician and painter specializing in pointillism, exhibits from April 25 to June 1.
  • A visual feature at Narita Airport’s Terminal 1 arrivals concourse integrates Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji with modern CGI, running for the duration of the exhibition.
