Inju: Into the Darkness is the 11th play by métro, a performing arts company that was launched by two female actors in 2008 (but currently run by Sarara Tsukifune).

Inju (literally meaning “inner beast”) is a métro original dramatization inspired by the works of famed novelist Edogawa Rampo, a pioneer in Japanese detective and mystery fiction. The play fuses two of Rampo’s works: his masterpiece novella called Inju (1928) and his novel Kenin Gengi (1954) written after World War II. The latter is a psychological mystery featuring an eccentric writer, Shundei Oh-e. In the play, Kenin Gengi is written by Oh-e; a story within a story. The audience toggles between those stories as they follow the contrasting heroines’ journeys.

métro has a unique system for producing and performing its plays. The company has no regular or fixed performers/crew. Instead, it gathers talented guest performers and fresh expert crew members for each new play.

Director Daisuke Tengan, known as a cinematic genius, is an essential person for métro. He directs and produces all of métro’s works from scratch, and continues to put his unique spin on literary masterpieces and works of satire.
