If you love summer festivals and anime, here’s an event that brings them together. The Kanda Myōjin Shrine Bon Odori combines a traditional Japanese summer festival and upbeat anime tunes for unique summer fun.
What happens?
This summer festival runs across three days in the heart of anime heaven in Tokyo — Akihabara. The highlight of each day is a unique Bon Odori dance with a different theme. Friday’s dance (starting at 5 p.m.) is the most popular for its anime music and costumes, whereas the weekend dances are hosted by local cultural organizations.
It’s not all about the dances. The venue is also hosting a beer and sake festival at the same time, so you can try some of Japan’s famous alcohol while you watch. And of course, see all the usual festival stall suspects. Stop off for a bite of fried chicken, noodles, or even chocolate bananas — this is a festival with all the trimmings.
