Hear the sounds of the traditional Japanese bamboo flute or shakuhachi in an approachable setting.
What to expect
This concert focuses on honkyoku, the solo shakuhachi repertoire once associated with wandering Zen Buddhist monks. The pieces are slow, spare and atmospheric, often drawing on images from nature or states of contemplation. The program spotlights the Kinko-ryū tradition and a group of pieces known as sugagaki, a comparatively rhythmic style.
Performers Mizuno Kohmei, Igarashi Suimei and Yajima Yūsuke will play works including Hi Fu Mi Hachigaeshi, Akita Sugagaki, Sanya Sugagaki, and Sayama Sugagaki, with commentary along the way to make the music more accessible.
It is free and requires no reservations.
