The unique feature of the Setagaya Hachimangū Shrine Fall Festival is the ritual sumo that takes place on a dohyo in front of the shrine. What happens? The main procession, in which mikoshi (portable shrines) are paraded around the neighborhood and then returned to the shrine, takes place on Sunday and goes for most of the day. The ritual sumo -- known as hōnōsumo -- is usually open to the public and takes place on Saturday. Schedule 2024 September 14 (Sat.): The ritual sumo will take place from 2 p.m. and the shrine's festival will start from 3 p.m. September 15 (Sun.): There will be ceremonies from 10 a.m. and from midday, the mikoshi will enter the shrine.
