Spring is already stirring at Sankeien.
What happens?
Let plum blossoms have their moment, we say. And what better place to experience their beauty and sophistication than Sankeien, Yokohama’s most majestic garden?
During the annual Plum Blossom Viewing Festival, the historic garden fills with pale pink and white blooms. There are around five hundred plum trees here — as well as a plum bonsai exhibition featuring around 40 carefully trained tiny trees.
To recreate the hospitality of Sankeien’s early days, free barley tea is served at Hatsune Chaya. The teahouse famously welcomed writer Ryūnosuke Akutagawa in 1915, who later wrote a haiku about his visit. Should you feel so inspired, you too can submit your own plum blossom-themed poem after a stroll through the garden.
