Once a year, the residents of the US Embassy Housing Compound in Roppongi hold a “Sidewalk Sale” to clear out old English books, clothes, sports equipment, and household knick-knacks.
The event is wildly popular with Tokyo residents with long queues forming outside the gates before they open. Although the sale continues until 2 p.m., the best items go quickly.
Entry to the compound (through the Grew Gate on the Roppongi side) is free, but requires photo ID for anyone 12 years or older. Leave any pets behind as they won’t be permitted to enter the compound.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
