Look up to see fireworks on March 11 in the sky above Tokyo while reminding yourself of the closest disaster evacuation point.
What to expect
The fireworks will launch on March 11 in memory of the victims of The Tōhoku Earthquake in 2011. The reason for the display is to remind everyone of their closest evacuation area in the event of a disaster. In Tokyo, every point is 2 km away from each other. 2 km is also said to be the ideal viewing distance for fireworks, hence the event.
Expect launches from three points at 7 p.m. in Tokyo:
- Meiji Shrine Gaien Stadium (220 fireworks)
- Komaba High School in Meguro (75 fireworks)
- Tamagawa Riverbed near Futako Tamagawa Station (200 fireworks)
The fireworks will last around 8 minutes.
Note that there is no official spectator area to view the fireworks, so please watch from a respectful distance. You can also watch the fireworks via a live stream.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
