If you’re looking for a taste of traditional Japanese culture, but aren’t a big fan of traditional theater vibes, this all-new event is for you.

Produced by Suigian, a luxurious underground bar and restaurant in Nihonbashi, Momokawaroh — Tokyo Underground Arts Society invites you to enjoy top-notch Noh and other performances, set to techno. “Jazz-Noh” is also on the menu.

The unlikely combination of Noh x techno (TechNoh) works surprisingly well; it turns out that Noh’s traditional beats beautifully sync with those of the musical genre. Throw in digital projections and lighting, a proper Noh stage, and a fully stocked bar in the background, and you have a winning way to spend a night out in Tokyo.

What to expect

The people on stage are far from your random-students-seeking-part-time-work crowd. Featured artists include:

  • DJ KRUSH (yes, that DJ Krush)
  • Ken Ishii (yes, also that one)
  • BLU-SWING — a band that fuses jazz and club music
  • Manjiro Tatsumi — Noh master and holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Collective Certification)
  • Tsunao Yamai — Noh master
  • Kiyomi Muraoka — woman Noh master, groundbreaking and rather rare
  • Momokawa Geinagon — Suigian’s woman artist unit, featuring nagauta, traditional dance, and koto music
  • Tadahiro Konoe — next head of the Konoe family, the foremost of the Gosekke (five regent houses) [co-producer]

Events will be held most Fridays. The line-up changes every week, so check the calendar to see who’s on stage when you are in town. Prices vary too; expect to pay between ¥5,000 and ¥30,000 — your ticket will include two drinks. Appetizers will be served in the early hours of the evening.

What to know about the venue

As a venue, Suigian draws inspiration from the legendary restaurant Momokawa, believed to be a literary and cultural hub in the Edo and Meiji eras.

It is one of the best places to experience Japanese attention to detail; everything from the carpets to the woodblock prints, gold-leaf entrance walls, incense (heavenly!) and serveware exudes a sense of exquisite consideration.

During the week, Suigian hosts Noh and other performing arts every day.

Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
