What to expect

WeLearn community is hosting a special event this January featuring kendama, karuta, sugoroku, and fukuwarai — traditions enjoyed in Japan during the New Year. Whether you’re new to Japanese or a fluent speaker, everyone is welcome to join in on the fun, competitions, and challenges.

  • Kendama challenge: See if you can master the art of kendama, a traditional Japanese skill toy that combines hand–eye coordination, balance, and rhythm.
  • Karuta: Use beginner-friendly picture cards to practice listening, reacting, and simple Japanese expressions.
  • Sugoroku exchange game: Try your hand at Sugoroku, a traditional Japanese board game, often compared to a mix of Snakes and Ladders and Monopoly featuring special prompts designed to spark conversation.
  • Fukuwarai: A classic New Year game similar to pin the tail on the donkey.
  • Free Social Time: Enjoy chatting, taking photos, and connecting with other participants.

This event is recommended for people who want to experience Japanese culture, practice Japanese, and make new friends.
