Turner Exhibition at the National Museum of Western Art

Turner spent a career chasing weather. This winter Tate Britain sends a slice of its holdings to Ueno, hung alongside contemporary work that picks up the same argument about scale, light and the point where a landscape stops being scenery.

What to expect

The show is built around the sublime: nature at the size where it turns unsettling. Rather than marching through Turner’s career in order, it sets his oils and watercolors against contemporary art, so the framing is less “great man of British painting” and more “this conversation is still going”.

The National Museum of Western Art is a good host for it. The main building is a Le Corbusier design, and your exhibition ticket also covers the permanent collection on the same day — worth the extra half hour if your legs hold out.

One catch: the permanent collection closes from January 12 to February 21, 2027, so visitors in the final six weeks get the Turner show only.

Schedule

The exhibition runs from October 24, 2026 to February 21, 2027.

Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with late opening until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

It closes on Mondays, and also on November 24, from December 28 to January 1, and on January 12. Two Mondays are exceptions and stay open: November 23 and January 11.

Tickets 2026

Adults pay ¥2,400 on the day or ¥2,200 in advance. University students are ¥1,500 and ¥1,300, high-school students ¥1,100 and ¥900. Middle-school students and younger go free, as do visitors with a disability certificate and one accompanying person.

Booking ahead saves ¥200 and a queue. That is the whole trick here.

How to get there

The museum is a 1-minute walk from the Park Exit of JR Ueno Station, or about 8 minutes from the nearest Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hibiya line exits.
