Ueno is Tokyo’s gateway to the north. In times past, trains loaded with seasonal workers from the poorer regions of Tohoku disgorged their human cargo at this major rail terminal. The area is also noted as the last major battle of the Boshin War between Shogunate and Imperial forces in 1868. The site of the battle is now occupied by Ueno Park which includes a Zoo (with Pandas!) and major museums including the Tokyo National Museum.

Ueno park is one of Tokyo’s largest central parks and is worth a visit all year round. Apart from the museums and zoo, during the Spring Cherry Blossom once can see the park overrun with locals celebrating hanami, and most of the year there’s usually street performers of often rather disparate, and occasionally bizarre variety.
