Register at your local ward office
You have 14 days to register your address. This one visit unlocks health insurance, My Number, and a lot else.
- Bring your passport + residence card
- You'll get a residency certificate (juminhyo)
- Enrol in National Health Insurance while you're there
- Apply for your My Number card — it arrives by post in 4–6 weeks
Heads up
Many ward offices have limited English. Bring a Japanese-speaking friend if you can — or a translation app. Allow 30–60 minutes.
