My Number card — applied for, arriving by post
You applied for this when you registered at the ward office in Step 5. A notification postcard lands in 4–6 weeks, then you collect the card in person.
Triggered at Step 5
Your My Number application was filed when you registered your address. Watch the post for a notification postcard (usually 4–6 weeks later) — that's your cue to go back to the ward office with passport + residence card and pick up the physical card.
- Keep the notification postcard safe — you need it to collect the card
- Pick-up takes 15–30 mins; bring passport, residence card, and the postcard
- Used for: tax filing, some bank applications, employer admin, and increasingly everyday services
- Works as ID at convenience stores and unlocks the Myna Portal (my.na.go.jp)
Don't ignore the postcard
It's easy to miss in a stack of Japanese mail. If it's been 8+ weeks and nothing's arrived, ask at the ward office.
