Opened in 1979, the museum was originally the private collection of tycoon Kunizo Hara, who later donated it for public access. The museum focuses on cutting edge culture and covers everything from music and dance to art and architecture. The permanent collection includes pieces from many well known Japanese and international artists including Yayoi Kasuma, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Yasumasa Morimura and Mark Rothko. There are special exhibitions held throughout the year.
Unfortunately, the museum closed its doors for good on January 11, 2021.
