This souvenir shop has been going strong for eight generations.

What to expect

Kanekoya is a small, family-run shop along Mount Ōyama’s Koma-sando, best known for making Ōyama koma, traditional hand-carved wooden spinning tops.

The tops have been sold as lucky souvenirs since the Edo period, when pilgrims climbing Mount Ōyama would stop to pick one up on their way to Afuri Shrine.

Experience one of the craziest, most colorful places in Tokyo — the all-new Samurai Restaurant, from the creators of the Robot Restaurant. Get your tickets and sit back for a wild show of lasers, lights, samurai, dancers and other uniquely Japanese weirdness.

Today, the shop is run by a single master craftsman, Kaneko-san, who continues to carve, balance, and paint each koma by hand, using traditional techniques and colors.

How to get there

Kanekoya is located along the approach to the Mount Ōyama Cable Car.

To get there from Shinjuku Station, take the rapid-express Odakyu Line train to Isehara Station, then a local bus (about 30 minutes) from the north exit to Mount Ōyama.
