From Kawaii Monster Café to Kawaii Monster Land

Kawaii Monster Café was an icon of Harajuku’s peak kawaii era. When the café closed in 2021, fans were left mourning the loss.

What to expect

Kawaii Monster Land is produced by globally renowned artist Sebastian Masuda, pioneer of Harajuku’s kawaii culture, ensuring continuity with the original’s DNA.

While the name suggests total sensory overload, in reality, the venue is contained and family-friendly. In other words, while the concept is sticky-sweet, the layout, spanning a manageable 400 square meters, is easy to navigate.

The basement space is dressed head to toe in pastel and highlighter shades, with dedicated spots for taking photos. Dance performances take place once an hour, generally on the half hour, and run for around 15 minutes.

The dancers are expressive and friendly, wearing elaborate, very Harajuku costumes. The loveable Choppy the monster also makes an appearance, and does his rounds for photos.

In terms of food, there are snacks and drinks designed for both taste and spectacle. Expect Choppy-themed pink cupcakes and colorful burgers, ranging in price from ¥880 to around ¥1,500. In addition to soft drinks and smoothies (around ¥1,100), there are also a few alcoholic drinks on offer (around ¥1,200) for visitors aged 20 and up.

The games are simple enough for anyone, including small children, to try: think a ball-drop machine and a spin-and-match setup with flashing panels. The crane games are stocked with prizes like scrunchies, stickers, and pins with colorful motifs like jellyfish, stiletto heels, lollipops and ice-cream cones.

The souvenir area also stocks a range of vividly colored goodies — among them you’ll find a pair of socks stamped with “Harajuku” across a bold paint-splatter design, hair clips with furry ears, and Choppy plushies.

Overall, Kawaii Monster Land is bright, playful and a little kitschy, but it’s not overwhelming. If you’re after a quick hit of classic Harajuku aesthetics — all things pastel, gooey, fuzzy and fluorescent — it delivers, and it’s totally enjoyable for younger kids, too.
