Many head to Mitake Gorge in the summer to cool off, or in the autumn to see the fall foliage.
The gorge is also an adventure spot where thrillseekers come barelling down the Tama River — we tried this experience ourselves (as well as canyoning).
You can see the gorge from Mitake Bridge, or head down the stairs on the side nearest to the station for a closer look.
