Nakagin Capsule Tower is one of the defining buildings of the Metabolism Movement. A leading proponent of the movement was the architect of this building—Kisho Kurokawa.
The original intention was for the pods to be detached, renovated, moved and attached as needed. Unfortunately this wasn’t practical and all of the pods have remained attached in their original positions.
The iconic building has been threatened with demolition since about 2010 but has somehow managed to survive. There are tours of the Tower available and some of the capsules have been available for rent on Airbnb.
