Located at the southeast corner of Shinobazu Pond, the Shitamachi Museum is dedicated to the history of the area where the common citizens of Edo lived.
The area around Ueno and further to the east is still known as Shitamachi (literally Downtown) and was inhabited by the regular townsfolk, as opposed to the Yamanote area which was home to the mansions, gardens and estates of the nobility.
Admission is free with the Grutto Pass. Also you can get a ¥100 discount if you present a ticket from the Asakura Museum of Sculpture or the Calligraphy Museum.
