Ueno Sakuragi Atari takes its name from sakuragi, literally “cherry tree” a reference to the groves that once lined this part of Ueno and atari, meaning “neighborhood” or “vicinity”. This small cluster of three wooden houses is now an oasis of calm in Ueno.

Built in the early Shōwa period nearly 90 years ago, the buildings have been restored. The area has been transformed into a laid-back community hub — a kind of third space, if you will.

Each of the buildings has a different focus: one houses Yanaka Beer Hall, another is home to a bakery known for its fresh bread and sweets, and a third sells olive oil and other fine foods. The shared courtyard sometimes features pop-ups and workshops.
