Tucked away in Nishiogi, Chinmitei offers a delicious taste of Taiwan with a side of Showa-era nostalgia. This family-run establishment, now in its third generation under Nobusuke and Kenji Hayashi, has a fascinating backstory. It all began with Kenji’s grandfather, who migrated from Taiwan and opened a restaurant in Shinjuku’s legendary Omoide Yokochō in 1955. After a setback, he relocated to Nishiogi and established Chinmitei in 1963, recreating that same intimate, alleyway atmosphere.

Don’t be fooled by the simple setting – ten seats inside and a few beer crates outside – Chinmitei delivers big on flavor. The zhu jiao (pork trotter) is a standout, featuring a satisfyingly crunchy skin and succulent, tender meat. Pair it with the flavorful mifen (glass noodles), stir-fried to perfection and topped with fragrant garlic. These two dishes are undeniably the stars of the menu.
