This local izakaya is only about a decade old, but it’s a bonafide neighborhood institution.
What’s Isohei Suzuran-dōri?
Styled like a traditional downtown bar with lanterns and casual seating, Isohei is a neighborhood izakaya favored by locals. The mood is unpretentious and warm.
The signature dish here is the rich motsu nikomi or beef offal stew with daikon and tofu, but there’s plenty more on the menu in case that doesn’t appeal.

On a recent visit, for example, we tried a flurry of small plates designed for sharing and priced around ¥400 to ¥600 each: the fried whole shishamo or smelt, fried chicken shaped into easy-to-handle lollipops, marinated tuna, rolled omelette, and classic edamame.
In terms of beverages, Isohei covers the spectrum: draft beer, sake, highballs, Hoppy with shōchū, and other izakaya staples.
