Grab a matcha (and a smile) from Matcha Passport — a cool, contemporary spot with super welcoming service.
What is Matcha Passport?
Reflecting the vibe of Shimokitazawa, Matcha Passport’s bilingual staff create an international atmosphere where everyone can enjoy matcha together. Born out of a love for matcha-making, founders Kantaro Fumoto and Robert Rudini tell us that their focus is on “continously learning about matcha and growing alongside the people who visit”. It’s this community-first approach that really makes Matcha Passport stand out from the crowd.
Talking through the menu, they mention that their best-seller item is the Signature Matcha Latte. Fumoto goes on to say, “What sets us apart is our curated selection of various cultivars and blends, each offering distinct flavors and aromas.” These blends, named after mystical animals, include:
- Komainu: a single-cultivar with a strong umami taste.
- Tanuki: a blend of several cultivars offering a distinct nutty flavor.
- Reiyo: a versatile matcha from Aichi Prefecture, known for its crisp and balanced flavor.
In addition to the popular matcha latte, you can explore other green creations. These include a classic latte, Earl Grey latte, strawberry late and usucha. Everything is customizable, meaning you can choose between dairy or non-dairy alternatives (for an additional cost). Expect to pay anything from ¥800 to ¥1,200 for your matcha, more if you add the non-dairy milk.
Feeling peckish? Treat yourself to sweet snacks like dorayaki (¥500) or matcha Basque cheesecake (¥850).
