What’s Nishi no Chaya?
Nishi no Chaya is a solid place to refuel while exploring Mount Ōyama.
Food-wise, the menu is all about tofu and yuba (tofu skin), a local Ōyama specialty tied to the area’s pilgrimage history and spring water.
The options range from quick, simple bowls of soba or udon to more filling set meals with multiple small dishes featuring tofu, mountain vegetables, and pickles.
If you want to try a bit of everything, the tofu course meals are the most popular option (from around ¥1,700). You’ll find a few restaurants serving tofu course meals along the shopping street that winds up the mountain; we picked this particular restaurant because it was open and had seats on the day we were there.
Seating is split between simple indoor tables, tatami seating, and a few outdoor spots where you can eat while listening to the stream running nearby.
