Sumoland is an experiential restaurant where you can watch sumo wrestlers train and pound mochi, and you can even step into the ring yourself.

What’s Sumoland?

This restaurant is run by the 63rd yokozuna, Asahifuji (Oyakata Isegahama), and features rikishi Terutsuyoshi Shōki among its performers. Visiting here offers a one-of-a-kind experience that blends sumo tradition with show-style entertainment. It sounds gimmicky, but it really isn’t (we went to see for ourselves).

During the family-friendly show, you’ll enjoy a sumo-style meal — chanko nabe — while watching sumo wrestlers demonstrate their training techniques. Next, you’ll see how mochi is traditionally pounded, with a chance to join in yourself.

After some friendly matches in the ring, you can step in for your own turn. For the finale, you’ll get to taste the freshly made mochi, take a commemorative photo, and leave with a special souvenir.

In between all the action, a lively MC keeps the energy high, offering English commentary and context for everything happening in the ring. It’s the perfect crash course for sumo beginners.
