Asakusa’s Hoppy Street is home to numerous restaurants and drinking establishments. Among them is Totoya, an izakaya with a focus on fresh fish.
Here, you’ll find Hoppy Street’s representative drink, Hoppy, in all three varieties (White, Black, and Red) as well as local favorite nikomi or Japanese stew. Totoya has a rotating menu of seasonal specials that highlight fish, from spicy-sweet yukke of assorted fish (the Japanese adaptation of Korean yukhoe) to sashimi. The restaurant also has an ever-changing selection of sake from a smattering of sake breweries near and far.
Note that the outdoor area, sheathed in plastic, is a smoking zone. While you can venture deeper in and get a seat in the no-smoking zone, there is no real separation between the two areas. There is a seating charge (around ¥350) for which you’ll get a small dish of potato salad, grilled cod roe, or something else to nibble on.
