The Tokyo Ueno New Izu Hotel (what a mouthful) is a conveniently located budget hotel just a few minutes from Ueno Station. The most affordable option is a single with shared bathroom priced at around 5000 yen for people who don’t mind a little communality. This medium hotel has both Japanese (with futons and tatami mats) and Western (with beds) style rooms. They have wifi throughout the hotel, English-speaking staff, and are located on a quiet street.
People staying more than three nights qualify for a discount rate, and there is no curfew, though doors are locked after 2 a.m. – just use the intercom and they’ll let you in. There’s a Lawson convenience store in the same building for 24-hour snacking ease, and their bicycle rental is quite cheap at only 300 yen per day.
The only thing that seems to be missing is an explanation for why this place is named after Izu. There is nary a beach to be seen here.
