There’s a new family-friendly arts festival in town — don’t miss Art Squiggle Yokohama 2024.
What to expect
Thought-provoking installations in an industrial warehouse, surrounded by the ocean.
From July 19 to September 1, 2024, the inaugural Art Squiggle Yokohama will take place at the edge of Yamashita Pier. This contemporary art festival features exhibitions from 16 up-and-coming local artists and collectives, with eight brand-new works debuting at the event.
Highlights include interactive workshops where you can make cool instruments, craft pixel art with iron beads, or help create an existential sandpit from a giant rock.
Don’t miss the floaty installation by Japan Photo Award winner Kohei Kawatani, or the innovative spatial designs by Takeshi Nishio, and signage planning and
graphic designs by Moeko Yamaguchi. Also look out for the esthetically pleasing giant poop pic.
All of the exhibitions bar one (a sound-art bus) are housed in an airconditioned warehouse, with the music stage set up outside. There is a tent, but note that it only provides limited shade.
There will be a small range of eats and drinks available for purchase from a food truck outside. Grab a craft beer and — if you’re there on the weekend — sit down to the live music that’s part of the related Sound Squiggle mini event.

How to get there
The Art Squiggle venue is listed as being a 5-minute walk from Exit 4 of Motomachi-Chūkagai Station on the Minato-Mirai Line. However, it’s actually around 5 minutes to the start of Yamashita Pier, and then another 10 minutes from there to the venue itself, which is Warehouse 4 — right at the end.
Editor’s note: Caution is advised in hot weather — take a parasol and portable fan, because it gets hot out there!
