Head to Manpukuji Temple at noon for a Japanese festival where tradition is set ablaze — sort of.

What happens?

As part of a cleansing ritual for the new year, monks rush through blazing flames to purify their minds at this annual festival. Not only that, but some will douse themselves with boiling water in front of visitors. Don’t worry, they are trained and safe, but it’s still an unforgettable sight.

Following the fiery display, monks and visitors pray together for a healthy and safe year ahead.
