Autumn leaves are a glorious sight to see — and even more so away from the city’s crowds. Head to the Nagatoro Autumn Leaves Festival for all the ambers and oranges of the Japanese countryside.
What happens?
Nagatoro is well known for its beautiful fall colors, with several spots that highlight the natural splendor. See the changing leaves from riverboats, suspension bridges, and even a ropeway.
To add to the effect, areas around Nagatoro will have illuminations threaded through the trees, for an equally beautiful nighttime view.
Highlights 2025
- Tsuki no Ishi Momiji Park: The park will have dozens of illuminations throughout, making it a great spot to enjoy the cool nights. There are also stalls selling hot beverages and some food. Entry to the illuminations is ¥300. From Nov. 7 to Nov. 30.
- Hodosan Shrine Illumination: The shrine will have its gate illuminated, throwing light onto the surrounding autumn leaves. From Nov. 1 to Nov. 24.
- Mt. Hodo Sunset Viewing Tour: Throughout November, the last ropeway ride will be later in the evening, giving you a stunning sunset view of the leaves.
How to get there
Reaching Nagatoro from Tokyo takes some time, but it’s worth it. The easiest way is to take the Laview Limited Express from Ikebukuro to Seibu Chichibu, then walk over to Ohanabatake Station and take the Chichibu Line to Nagatoro Station. Note that Tsuki no Ishi Momiji Park is actually closer to Kami Nagatoro Station (about 5 minutes on foot).
Another option is to take the Tobu-Tojo Line from Ikebukuro to Yorii Station (1 hour and 15 minutes), followed by the Chichibu Line to Nagatoro Station (15 minutes).
