The plum blossoms found at Ōme Ume (Plum) Park are beautiful to behold — and come with a side of traditional festivities.
Ōme is the place to be if you want both a view of cherry blossoms and a fun-filled event that includes tours, dances, performances, and marches.
Note that while there are now plenty of plum trees to view, they all had to be chopped down in 2014 and replanted. This means they might not be as large as you’d expect from other parks, but the fun of this festival extends beyond the pink blossoms.
The best day to go is on Sunday, March 10 when there will be stage events and parades throughout the park.
How to get there
You can get to Ōme Station from Shinjuku Station in 1 hour on the Chuo Line Rapid. From there, either take the Ume 76 Bus to the “Yoshino-Bairin” stop (12 minutes) or change trains to the Ōme Line, get off at Hinatawada Station (10 minutes), and walk for 15 minutes.
