The Koishikawa Botanical Gardens are operated by the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Science and boast over 4000 species of plants. Located a leisurely 8-minute walk from Hakusan Station on the Mita Line, it's the perfect place for a stroll or a picnic. (Just make sure not to confuse this park with the similarly named Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens.) There are plenty of paths, a big pond, an arboretum, a greenhouse and lots of lawn space. Visitors with a green thumb will also appreciate that the plants are clearly labelled in English and Japanese. Of course, no Japanese park would be complete without cherry blossom trees – and the Koishikawa Botanical Gardens have several varieties on display.
