A generation that's logging off, raiding the early 2000s for inspiration, and falling explosively for one specific boy band -- here are the nine trends sweeping Japanese Gen Z right now, specifically the girls. 1. "So cute I could perish" -- the catchphrase of the year Topping Mynavi's ranking of buzzwords, named by over 50% of teen girls, is –sugite metsu (○○すぎて滅) — roughly, “so [X] I could perish.” Kawaii-sugite metsu: so cute I could die. It’s the Japanese cousin of “I’m deceased,” and you’ll hear it tacked onto everything from concert reactions to convenience-store snacks. The phrase jumped straight out of a M!LK song (more on them in a minute), and a related chant, ba-ku-re-tsu, landed at number two with 47.9%. 2. The M!LK whirlwind If 2026 has a soundtrack, it belongs to M!LK. The five-piece band swept three of Mynavi’s categories at once — top act (55.7%), top song (53.3%) and top phrase. Their double A-side “Bakuretsu Aishiteru / Suki Sugite Metsu!” handed teens both the year’s catchphrase and its defining move: a snapped-finger ba-ku-re-tsu pose now practically mandatory in every purikura photo booth. “Bakuretsu Aishiteru” became the group’s first number one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 (chart dated 25 February), shifting more than 600,000 copies in its opening week. The pull is strong enough to reach backwards in time, too: a summer 2025 magazine special with M!LK on the cover, S Cawaii! ME, was sent back to print twice by popular demand nearly a year after it first sold out — practically unheard of for a magazine. 3. Sticker books are back The sticker book (shiiru-chō), that Heisei-era ritual of collecting, trading and hoarding puffy 3D stickers and water-filled seals in a dedicated album, is back. For a generation raised on screens, it’s tactile and pleasingly low-stakes — and the most coveted stickers have become hard to get hold of. Millennials are loving it and also slightly jealous, as well as feeling really old right now. 4. Nintendo nostalgia, served new Tomodachi Collection (known overseas as Tomodachi Life) returned with a new Switch game in April 2026, while Rhythm Heaven announced its first new entry in 11 years for July. The fresh releases sent the original Nintendo DS games viral on TikTok all over again. 5. Y3K: the aesthetic after Y2K If Y2K defined the last few years of fashion, its sequel has arrived. Y3K apparently swaps low-rise nostalgia for a chrome, silver and outer-space palette — stars, planets and spaceship shine, the year 3000 as imagined by kids who grew up online. We aren't so sure about this one, but have been told to expect it across clothing and beauty. 6. Shōjo-manga-core This means dressing like the heroine of a 1990s–2000s girls’ manga. Think sweet, a little retro, unmistakably Heisei — and very compatible with the lingering Y2K look. Again, not sure how this will fit with the alleged space-suit craze that's coming, but anyway. 7. Deca drinks You might have seen some comically oversized beverages on your feed, with the trend led by Mixue and its cups from around . Maximum volume, minimum spend, maximum photo. File it alongside the year’s other sweet fixations: sago bowls and Dubai-chocolate mochi. 8. Attention detox SHIBUYA109 lab.’s headline concept for the year is the “attention detox” — a generation stepping out of the spotlight. In practice that means phone-free trips, friends-only closed apps, and small, offline hangouts. And stuff like that. 9. Decorate everything The decorate-everything impulse runs from mahō-shōjo-kaiwai (wearing magical-girl transformation accessories out in daily life) to bedazzled medicine and insurance-card holders, DIY patchwork tees and 3D-printed keychains.
