Patrick Balfe

Events Editor at Tokyo Cheapo and Japan Cheapo | 8+ Years of Japan Experience

Patrick is an Australian music fan, dog lover, and the events editor at Tokyo Cheapo and Japan Cheapo. He used to organize events, but these days he prefers to write about them, covering gigs, naked festivals, and everything in between.

Special Interests: Pet-friendly hangouts, outdoor music events, and divisive reality television.

With over eight years of experience in Tokyo and a background in gig and festival bookings, he brings his taste for music and entertainment to the Tokyo Cheapo and Japan Cheapo events team.

Professional Background: Patrick worked in the Australian music industry for 10 years before moving to Tokyo and becoming a writer and editor. He can also be found writing for Time Out Tokyo, editing for Rolling Stone Japan, and playing drums for Toruko Ishi. He has a media and communications degree from Queensland University of Technology.

Tokyo Expertise: Patrick has attended and played gigs all over Tokyo. He’s pretty much sussed out most of the good record stores and pet-friendly cafes in and around Setagaya and rarely says no to an all-you-can-drink izakaya menu. He’s also managed to soak up a fair bit of knowledge about telecommunications, like pocket WiFi and eSIM options for Japan.

Specializations:

Live music: International artists touring Japan and up-and-coming local bands
Regional tourism: Highlighting lesser-known travel destinations and local communities
Telecommunications: How to spot the best deals for eSIMs and portable WiFi
Cultural events: Festivals, seasonal celebrations, and local community gatherings
Expat living: Practical insights for long-term residents and digital nomads
