The winter edition of the Akōgishisai -- a festival commemorating the 47 rōnin (or masterless samurai) -- happens at Sengakuji Temple, the very same place to which the 47 loyal samurai took their enemy's severed head and where they are now buried. What happens? Don't expect any colorful re-enactments; this is a serious religious event with a graveside ceremony, a ritual tea ceremony, and a memorial service taking place at the main hall. For an in-depth look at the historical rendition and what to expect at the festival, read our article: "There were only 46: The 47 Loyal Samurai and their festival" Schedule 2025 The festival technically runs for three days (December 12 to 4), but the procession takes place only on December 14, arriving at the temple around 3:30 p.m.
