A huge field of wintersweet (rōbai) trees blooms across the Yadoriki Wintersweet garden in early spring.
What happens?
If you can’t wait for plum or cherry blossoms, Matsuda’s Wintersweet Festival has you covered with some of spring’s earliest blossoms. Home to over 20,000 wintersweet trees, the southern slope of Yadoriki’s Utsushige district brims with delicate waxy yellow flowers and their distinctive sweet fragrance.
Besides the blossoms, the expansive park and festival hosts a range of stalls selling local products, crafts, food, and souvenirs.
Entry
The entry fee of ¥500 (adults only, children get in for free) is put towards the care of the park and the winter seedlings.
How to get there
The garden is around a 2-hour trip from Shinjuku Station. Take the Odakyu Line to Shin-Matsuda Station (1 hour and 15 minutes) and then grab the 51 bus (25 minutes) to the Udumo stop. The garden is around a 10-minute walk from there.
